AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program within the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Since 1965, Americans have dedicated one year to serving their community in an effort to fight poverty with passion. In exchange for their service, members receive a modest living allowance that places them at the poverty level. Additionally, VISTA members can choose between receiving a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or post-service stipend.
Members make a full-time commitment for one year to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency, focusing their efforts on indirect service. This can include building the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy; improving health services; fostering economic development; and otherwise assisting low-income communities.
